How to Help Your Child with the 2nd Year Maths CBA

If you’ve recently heard your child’s teacher mention the 2nd Year Maths CBA, you’re probably worried about the same thing most parents do: how exactly can I help my child?

I’d like to assure you that the Maths CBA isn’t designed to catch students out. It’s an opportunity for them to investigate a mathematical problem, explain their thinking and show the skills they’ve been developing throughout Junior Cycle Maths. While it is quite different from a traditional exam, students who prepare early and understand what’s expected usually find it far less daunting than they first imagined.

In this guide, I’ll explain what the 2nd Year Maths CBA is, how it works under the 2026 Junior Cycle, what teachers are looking for, and the practical ways you can support your child throughout the process without doing the work for them.

What is a CBA?

The Maths Classroom-Based Assessment (CBA) is a project completed by students during 2nd Year of Junior Cycle. Rather than sitting another exam, students investigate a mathematical problem of their choice, analyse their findings and explain their reasoning using the maths they’ve learned in class.

Unlike exams, there isn’t a single correct answer or method. Instead, students are assessed on how well they apply mathematical concepts, communicate their thinking and justify the decisions they make throughout their investigation.

The Maths CBA is completed in school over a number of weeks with guidance from the classroom teacher. Every student completes the assessment, but each school decides exactly when it takes place within the timeframe set by the NCCA. The aim isn’t to memorise formulas or revise for an exam. Instead, the CBA encourages students to think like mathematicians by exploring real-world problems, making connections within their chosen topic, and clearly explaining how they’ve reached their conclusions.

2026 Changes (Important)

As of 2026, the requirements for the Maths CBA has been revised and applies to 2nd and 3rd Year students entering the 2026-2027 Academic Year. Your child will now have to complete only one Classroom-Based Assessment (CBA) rather than two. The Assessment Task that was previously linked to the second CBA has also been removed.

This is the biggest change to the Junior Cycle Maths assessment in recent years.

What Do Students Actually Do for the Maths CBA?

Every Maths CBA begins with a mathematical investigation. Students are given a task or problem to explore and are encouraged to approach it like a mathematician by asking questions, testing ideas and looking for patterns.

Throughout the investigation, they’ll record their findings, make calculations, explain their decisions and refine their work as they progress. Rather than rushing to a final answer, they are expected to show how they arrived there and support their conclusions with mathematical evidence. No two Maths CBA investigations are exactly the same, but they all encourage students to think independently and apply the mathematical skills they’ve learnt in the classroom until then.

During the Maths CBA, students may be asked to:
• Explore patterns or relationships
• Collect and analyse data
• Compare different methods or solutions
• Use graphs, tables and diagrams to present information
• Draw conclusions based on mathematical evidence
• Reflect on the results of their investigation

The investigation could draw on topics such as:
• Number (fractions, decimals, percentages and ratios)
• Algebra
• Geometry and Trigonometry
• Statistics
• Probability

In case you struggle to picture what a CBA question could look like, here are a few examples.

Question: “Which mobile phone plan offers the best value over a year?”

Your child would then have to compare different pricing structures, calculate monthly and annual costs, create graphs and justify which option represents the best value. This question would involve Algebra, Numbers, Graphs, Financial Maths.

Question: “Is there a relationship between height and shoe size?”

Your child would collect data from a group of students, organise the results into a table, create a scatter graph and look for any relationship between the two variables. They would then explain whether the data suggests a correlation and justify their conclusion using mathematical evidence. This question would involve Statistics, Graphs, Data Analysis and Interpretation.

Question: “Which supermarket offers the cheapest weekly shopping basket?”
Your child would have to deduce the grocery essentials for the household, compare prices across different supermarkets, calculate totals, percentages or discounts where appropriate, and justify which shop offers the best overall value. This question would involve Number, Percentages, Financial Maths and Algebra.

How Do Teachers Assess the Maths CBA?

The Maths CBA isn’t awarded a percentage or grade. Instead, your child’s teacher assesses their work using a set of Features of Quality and will award them with a descriptor of achievement.

– Exceptional
– Above Expectations
– In Line with Expectations
– Yet to Meet Expectations

This is why it’s so important for students to explain their thinking throughout the Maths CBA. Teachers are looking for how your child got to their conclusion. By justifying their decisions and explaining each step, they can allow teachers to see the thought process behind their conclusions.

Common Mistakes in Maths CBA

Most students don’t lose quality in their Maths CBA because they don’t understand the maths. More often, it’s because they rush their investigation, skip explanations or overlook small details that teachers are specifically looking for. Here’s common mistakes I see my 2nd Years make, and how your child can avoid them.

No explanations to their working

Many students are worried about getting the answer right, and forget that the Maths CBA awards the process to the answer. Again, I can’t stress enough that teachers want to see their reasoning behind every decision. Encourage your child to explain why they chose a method, not just what the answer is.

Question: “Does spending more time revising improve Maths test results?”

Poor answer: Yes, it does.

Good answer: “Based on the data collected from 25 students, those who revised for more than three hours per week scored an average of 18% higher in their Maths tests than those who revised for less than one hour. While there were a few exceptions, the overall trend suggests that increased revision time is associated with improved test results.”

Little to no data collection

If the investigation involves collecting information, using only a handful of examples can make it difficult to identify meaningful patterns or draw reliable conclusions.

Jumping to conclusions

Students should let the evidence lead them to a conclusion, rather than deciding on an answer before analysing the data. Rushing to the answer usually leaves gaps in their working.

Poor presentation

The Maths CBA doesn’t need to look perfect, but it has to be easy to follow. Make it easy for the teacher to understand their process. It is important to have clear headings, labelled graphs, organised tables.

No reflection on conclusions

Most students stop once they’ve answered the question. A stronger investigation explains what the results mean, whether there were any limitations and whether a different approach might have produced different findings.

Leaving it till the last week

The best Maths CBA investigations develop over time. Starting early gives students the opportunity to improve their work, check calculations, and most importantly, gives them ample time to collect more data.

TJ’s Tips for Helping Your Child with Maths CBA

You don’t need to be a mathematician to help your child excel in their Maths CBA. In fact, the most valuable support often has little to do with solving the maths itself. Here are some simple ways you can help make the Maths CBA a positive and rewarding experience.

Encourage them to explain their thinking

Encourage your child to explain why they chose a particular method, how they reached their conclusion and whether their answer makes sense. Verbalising their justification to you can help them process their logic.

Help them stay organised

A strong Maths CBA cannot be completed in one evening. Starting early gives your child time to collect meaningful data, analyse their findings, and make improvements before submission. Leaving everything until the final week often leads to rushed conclusions and missed opportunities to demonstrate their mathematical thinking.

Ask questions instead of giving answers

One of the best ways to support your child is by asking thoughtful questions rather than providing answers. Prompting them to explain their decisions helps them think more deeply about the investigation, identify gaps in their reasoning and build the logical thought process that teachers are looking for in the Maths CBA.

Check that their investigation is easy to follow

If you can’t understand your child’s Maths CBA, there’s a good chance their teacher will struggle as well. Ask them to walk you through their investigation from start to finish. If something doesn’t make sense to you, suggest methods to help them explain it more clearly, such as labelling graphs or a more detailed reasoning. Clear communication is a key part of the assessment.

Let them pick a topic of interest

Whether it’s football, music, gaming, shopping or another hobby, students often find it easier to stay motivated when they’re exploring something they enjoy. The strongest Maths CBA investigations are ones where students are engaged enough to ask good questions, collect meaningful data and explain their findings with confidence. Interest naturally leads to curiosity, and curiosity often leads to a stronger investigation.
