The Mocks Are the Worst Part of the Year

Mock exams are the worst part of the school year for most students. They put huge pressure on teenagers, create stress in homes, and convince perfectly capable students that they are bad at maths or school in general. For many families, mock exam season feels overwhelming, even though it doesn’t need to be.

The truth is that mock exams are not a fair reflection of how a student will perform in the real Leaving Cert. They are a checkpoint, not a verdict. Understanding that can take a lot of pressure off straight away.

June Will Be Easier Than the Mocks

One of the biggest things students and parents forget is that the real exams in June are usually easier than the mocks. Mock exams are tightly packed together, rushed, and often unnecessarily wordy. Students sit them with very little revision time, which naturally makes them feel harder.

By the time June arrives, exams are more spread out, students are better prepared, and confidence is higher. Every year, we see students perform significantly better in the Leaving Cert than they did in their mock exams, especially in maths.

The CAO Deadline Is Today and That’s Okay

The CAO deadline adds another layer of stress during mock exam week, but it doesn’t need to. The most important thing is to get the application submitted. Focus on the order of preference, not points. Points change. Preferences can be updated later in the year, even into the summer.

This part of the process is administrative, not academic. Getting it done early clears mental space and lets students refocus on what actually matters.

If You’re Struggling, Focus on June

If you feel behind or underprepared, the worst thing you can do is panic about the mocks. Mock results do not define a student’s ability, intelligence, or future options. What matters most is how the months between now and June are used.

There are several months after the mocks to improve, fix gaps in understanding, and build confidence. We see students turn things around every single year. One bad mock exam does not cancel out years of potential.

This Too Shall Pass

Mock exam season feels intense when you are in it, but it does pass. Every year, students feel like this is the hardest point, and every year they come out the other side stronger and more confident.

You’ll be fine.
